GEE, HANNAH (c 1774 ? - 1821). Harm ah Gee was sentenced to seven years transportation at the February 1788 Old Bailey Sessions for the theft of a bundle of clothing containing a pair of stays, a gown,a cloak, an apron, a handkerchief and a,pair of stuff shoes. She was employed as a servant by a couple who 1 Irfved at London Wall. Her mistress told the court that, being ill, she had slept late and came downstairs to find Gee in the passage wear -ing her cloak and pinning her bonnet on, with the clothes tied up in her apron. Suspecting that she was just about to leave her service and steal the clothes, the employed had Gee arrested, In court Gee maintain -ed that she had put the clothes in her lap because she was about to clean the room in which they were kept. She claimed that her mistress knew perfectly well that she was not putting her bonnet on to go out. but because she had had bad eyes for several days; my mistress said she , would send for a constable, and would hang me, if she could, I had no more intention of taking the things, than I have of going to Jamacia ^ this minute. Her colourful illusion did not convince the jury and she was sent back to Newgate to await an ordsr for transportation, which c came on 14 March 1789, when she was embarked on the Lady Juliana transport, age given as 19. She was recorded as alias Ann Teasdale. On 6 October 1790, four months after landing, Gee married Thomas Cheshire. Her name is rendered Ann in some colonial records. Her son J James, fathered by the Lady Juliana seaman James Blake (qv) was baptised on 23 November (the child died in January 1792. (Family as per Thos Cheshire notes) Hannah died in July 1821 and was buried on the 18th at St. Peters Cemetary, Richmond, age given as 47 (but nearer52 according to age giv . een on embarkation). In an illusion of his mother's name George named his property Teasdale. The land was situated south west of Bathurst between Hobbys Yards and Barry. A small town grew on this sight later in the nineteenth century. The village has since vanished, but the name is preserved in the names of two modern properties in the area. notes; London Wall survives as a street of this name in modern London EC1/EC2; Hannah/Ann Gee/Teasdale may be identified as the daughter of Thomas Teasdale and Ann Gee baptised at Endall Street, Holborn on 5May 1775. According to the age given on embarkation she was born 1769/1770 If this age was correct she would have been at least 5 when baptised.O One possible explanation for her alternate use of surnames would be that she may have been born out of wedlock, which may account for a late baptism; her age given at burial (47 in Julyl821) suggests a 1774/1775 birth year and the embarkation age may well be incorrect; the location of her crime in north London, close to Holborn, is consistant with her coming from this locality. Some details contributed by H, Reichenbach & A. Salt; see also Y. Browning St. Peters Richmond. 9/ 2/ 1788 employer was a John Green.
