William RODGERS

General Notes:
William and Annie Rodgers and their young family left Omagh, Northern Ireland about 1836 and came first to the Windsor area. Here their eldest daughter married William Rhodes in 1845.
In September 1837, William was working on a farm near Ravensworth where Rebecca was baptised and by 1848 they had moved to the Rouchel River Valley in the Hunter District and were among the first settlers there. In 1853 they were in the Glen Innes area and negotiated with Robert Meston to transfer "Morven" to them and here they settled for a few years. James the second son married in 1858 and took over Morven. The rest of the family moved to "Glen Elgin" and later Alexander, the eldest son also took up "Newton Boyd" and "Shannonvale".
Anne married John Fletcher of "Ferndale" Bald Knob. It was here in 1862 that the portraits were painted , also one of Ann which we would like to trace.
The artist, Joseph Backler (1814-1897) was transported for forgery in 1832 aged 18 years. He was pardened in 1844. Exhibitions of his work held in Sydney 1847.
