(BR) = BUSHRANGER Born at Teasdale Park Fitzroy Inn, Parkes, NSW, Australia
Eugowra: A small town with a population of 612 and 30km from Canowindra. Eugowra has the distinction of being the scene of Australia's largest ever gold robbery.
On June 15th 1862 just outside the town at Escort Rock, bushranger Frank Gardiner and his gang, then including the infamous Ben Hall, held up the Cobb & Co coach. At about 4.30pm the thrice weekly coach from Forbes to Orange was stopped at rocks about 5km north of Eugowra by the gang. After commandeering two bullock teams the gang blocked the road and made the drivers lie on the road, faking drunkeness. When the gold escort arrived the gang fired on the coach and police escort, wounding Sergeant Condell and Constable Moran. The gang then made off with the 2,719 ozs of gold and £3700 cash. Ben Hall was later caught, held & charged but was later released after another captured gang member refused to name him as a participant in the robbery. Only a portion of the gold & cash was ever recovered and many believe the remainder lies hidden in the hills surrounding the town.
On the 16th April, 1864, Donald Chesher was charged, found guilty, and sentenced to 5 years hard labour, for his part in receiving stolen banknotes, which were part of the ransom from the Henry Keightley raid at Dunns Plains. Donald was at Bathurst when he was caught with the money as he was buying goods for the "Ben Hall Gang". Donald had a special coded note which listed what he had to buy.
